Edinburgh is home to a range of galleries as well as smaller independent galleries and art shops.
The National Galleries of Scotland house a marvellous collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photography, sculpture and graphic art from world renowned artists. It is often the venue for some major UK exhibitions such as the exclusive Monet collection held here in 2003.
The National Galleries of Scotland comprise of four galleries located in the centre of the city which include;

National Gallery of Modern Art
The above galleries are open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 12 noon to 5pm and a free bus runs between all four galleries.
Aside from the main galleries, Edinburgh has several smaller exhibitors where the work of up-and-coming contemporary artists can be viewed;
City Art Centre - houses 6 exhibition galleries. Home to the city's collection of Scottish art, with works by Peploe, McTaggart, Ferguson and Eardley. 2 Market Street, Tel: 0131 529 3993. Open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm
Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop and Gallery - Exhibits a huge range of contemporary art including, screen prints, etchings and lithographs, where you can buy prints and view the workshops. 23 Union Street, Tel: 0131 557 2479. Open Tue-Sat 10am-6pm
